Computer chess
Pachman L., Kühnmund V., Routledge&Kegan Paul Ltd., London, UK, 1986. Type: Book (9789780710097859)
Date Reviewed: Oct 1 1987

Originally published in Germany in 1980, this translation has now been extended to include more up-to-date information. The book has two distinct parts. The first half attempts to describe how computers “play” chess by providing a brief history of the field of computer chess and reviewing some important successes by chess programs. It also discusses human thought processes and gives some insights into selecting the right chess computer. The second half is an analysis by Grand Master Pachman of several games by various chess machines.

One might not expect much about the application of computer technology from a paperback, and so the lack of depth in some sections will not come as a surprise. In true journalistic style the text flows from a traditional historical review to details about how computers represent numbers. Sadly, there are several annoying errors throughout the early chapters, especially on historical points. Also the section on essential mathematics is truly both tiresome and poor. It is inadequate for the computer enthusiast and incomprehensible to newcomers to the field, especially where the coding of chess pieces is concerned. Aside from Chapter 6, Choosing and Buying the Right Chess Computer, which contains material that will quickly become outdated, this book offers little over these contemporary, popular works: [1], [2], and [3].
