A guide to packet-switched, value-added networks
St. Amand J., Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., Indianapolis, IN, 1986. Type: Book (9789780029490204)
Date Reviewed: Oct 1 1986

This small volume presents a bird’s-eye view of five specific Packet-Switched (PS) Value-Added Networks (VANs): GTE Telenet, Tymnet, Uninet, ADP Autonet, and AT&T Net 1000 (the latter is no longer being offered). While all of the data in the book (rate information, available services, etc.) can be had directly from the network vendors, the book does serve a useful purpose by bringing this data together for the main PS-VAN alternatives in the US. Corporate telecommunications managers not familiar with PS-VANs will find this overview especially helpful.

Readers expecting a discussion of the internal workings of the networks, their routing algorithms, and their computer hardware and software should look elsewhere.
