Back to the future
Cerf V. Communications of the ACM62(6):7-7,2019.Type:Article

The name of this short article comes from the fact that the dawn of the Internet with the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) reintroduced the store-and-forward method used for telegraphs, but instead of human nodes that made information hop from one station to another, the Internet relies on digital switching from one computer node to another, depending on the path.

The paper recapitulates briefly the story of the telegraph, and how it resembles the multilayered structure of the Internet today, that is, the Internet uses a similar concept but with much faster technological tools to achieve more complex and heavier in data communications (such as videoconferencing and remote video gaming).

I recommend this article to people interested in refreshing their ideas about the history of the Internet, as well as those who might want to apply these ideas to its future.
