Over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained popularity in different industrial applications. IoT has become an integral part of industries such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and warehousing, to name a few. This paper presents the role and importance of IoT in developing smart and intelligent warehousing environments.
Some of the application areas for intelligent warehousing considered by the authors are the retrieval and picking of orders at the warehouse, the monitoring and diagnosis of sorting systems, as well as the real-time monitoring and management of incoming and outgoing goods at the warehouse. The authors propose the use of IoT to improve the efficiency of the applications while reducing the error rates. Technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), Zigbee, and Wi-Fi are proposed for identification, tracking, supervision, and control. The authors briefly discuss challenges such as reliability, heterogeneity, and big data. The prospects of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and big data in intelligent warehousing are written about very briefly.
This is a theoretical paper; it does not include any experimental results, analysis, or validation. IoT is being used in various industrial applications already. Proposing or presenting its use for intelligent warehousing is neither a substantial research idea nor a significant research contribution.
