Computing Reviews Automated Production System Completed as Reviewers Begin Self-Assigning Items, Writing Reviews Online: 1000-plus reviewers online for immediate, real-time editing

New York, NY Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - Today, with the addition of the online Reviewer's Area, Reviews.com completed the launch of Computing Review's automated production system. CR's community of 1000-plus reviewers can now search and self-assign items for review, and then write and submit their reviews online. Computing Reviews is the online resource for reviews of the best books and articles in computing literature, available for subscription at www.reviews.com.

"When combined with our Readers' Area, launched last June, and the Editor's Area, launched this past month, the Reviewer's Area completes the transformation of Computing Reviews from a rich paper journal into a dynamic online database," said Bruce Antelman, President of Reviews.com. "This addition marks the completion of our automated production system, which was vital to our vision for Computing Reviews from the beginning."

"The Reviewer's Area will significantly increase the speed of the publication and also allows our reviewers to take a more hands-on on approach towards the scope and focus of content," said Carol Wierzbicki, Executive Editor of Computing Reviews. "With editors and reviewers suggesting items for review and assigning (or self-assigning) items, the authors of Computing Reviews will have a greater impact on the reviews in the publication."

"This is a milestone both for Computing Reviews and Reviews.com as a whole," added Antelman. "CR is being built as a model for future titles. The technology, editorial process and user base have been developed to be easily transferable as we expand Reviews.com into the premier reviewing service for academic and scientific literature."

Developed by Reviews.com and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Computing Reviews helps readers manage the large amount of new material published in computer science by pointing them to the best new journal articles and books and giving them a continually updated overview of the field. Readers also benefit from the ability to link to full text, receive customized alerts and read multiple points of view. Reviewers have been carefully screened to ensure that they are qualified to provide expert opinions on the material they review. A Category Editor also checks each review for fact and style prior to publication. Computing Reviews is based on ACM's 40-year-old print journal of the same name.
